Can You Paint Security Doors?

In short, yes, we’re able to paint security doors. The powder coat finish is designed to be durable, but it fades quickly with our blue skies and harsh sun. If you are shopping for a security door, splurge for the hammered finish. It’s a little more expensive, but it lasts much longer.

Hand sand it hard to scuff and dull the surface. We need to make sure we get every side, in every nook and cranny. The next step is to wipe it down with a solvent to get any hand oils off or anything else that might have been splashed or spilled on there.

Next, we’ll mask the door. Most of the job painting a security door or iron rail is masking. Next, we’ll take off the deadbolts and doorknob to make sure we get every bit of the door covered with the paint. Our goal is to make it look as good as it did when you first bought it.

Sometimes, security doors have screen frames around it. If we’re going to paint the screen frame it’s attached to, we need to remove the screen since tape doesn’t stick to the screen at all. Then, we’ll need to re-screen the door. If the little bit of aluminum shows, and you want it to match the rest of your paint, we’ll need to remove the screen. In rare cases, we may need to buy new screen, and new webbing to attach it.

If your door is just a screen door, we highly recommend buying a new door. If we attempt to paint a screen door, it’ll just become very sticky from our high quality paints – and you don’t want that.
