Repair or Replace – Making the Correct Diagnosis for Your Drywall

Drywall Repair and Replacement in DeweyDrywall is a standard material to use for creating interior walls in the home. One reason for this is that it is affordable, including repairs or replacement. However, where Dewey homeowners tend to get confused is when trying to decide if they need just repairs, or if it is time for replacement.

Get Real, But Get Proactive

Your walls offer more than interior support for your home. They provide a space on which to paint, decorate and hang treasured family portraits. Yet, if your walls are in a state of disrepair, that’s about all that is going to get noticed in your home. So here are a few things that you should be thinking about, when it comes to deciding between repairs and replacement for your drywall.

The type of damage has a lot to do with determining if you need repairs or total replacement. For example, any time the damage involves excessive moisture, replacement is a must. Wet or moldy walls only lead to bigger problems, like rot. Plus, mold itself poses a health threat that you should not be willing to take.

As a general rule, holes that are 6” x 6” or less are ideal candidates for repairs. Anything bigger means replacement. This is usually because larger holes mean they could pose a threat to the structural integrity of the wall. Better safe than sorry.

Often times, for walls that have been textured, replacement is the only viable solution, for visual aesthetics. It becomes too difficult to try to match the look, so the repaired area becomes obvious. In fact, instead of blending seamlessly, it ends up sticking out like a sore thumb. Popcorn ceilings are a prime example of an area that is impossible to repair without visible detection.

Sometimes, the location of the damage also ends up playing a role. Lower wall damage can mean there is too much load bearing weight on a pivotal area of the wall. Get too close to the top of the wall where the ceiling rests, and this could begin a chain of unwanted events in which the ceiling crumbles and poses the threat of caving in.

The damage may be surface only, but seemingly impossible to conceal. In that case, you may want to opt for replacement. However, if you plan on covering the wall using wallpaper or a textured paint, you can probably leave the wall as is.
